When I went over to the house today, they were finishing putting the wood behind the iron on the garage door. This means that we no longer needed the old garage doors to block the view in, so I got the guys to put them in the back of the truck. We promised them to the Dodwell's for their gate and I wanted to be sure to get them as soon as I could. Their builder needs them to build them into the wall he's building. It's all just a domino game. Anyway, I didn't have time to go to the beach with them so dropped the truck with Mimi and took the jeep off to CostCo to buy a telephone.

I don't even want a landline telephone, I think it is silly for a house to have a phone. People have phones, houses don't need them. But, in order to get DSL internet I have to also have a phone line from Telmex. To test the phone line and see if it works, I have to have a phone. If I have to have a phone for the house then I want it to be wireless and I think we should have 2 of them. I haven't decided if we should each have one in our pocket so we can find each other in that huge place or if one phone should live upstairs and one downstairs. It's quite possible I'd never answer the house phone anyway so I'm really thinking of them more like walkie talkies. Maybe I'm still thinking like an RVer though.

I feel like I live at CostCo and Sam's club and WalMart these days. As usual, I got hooked on the coolest phones there, I just liked the look. However, as I was heading for the checkout I realized I only had $900 pesos in my pocket and the ATM is back at the front of the store. So, I detoured by the phones again and found ones that will do just fine that cost $899 pesos. I do love that tax is almost always included in the listed price, it makes it so much easier. I got the cheaper set, got my 1 peso change - yes, really! - and then decided I had to have a hot dog so had to hit the ATM anyway.

So, we have 2 wireless phones charging on the kitchen counter and if they ever get the wires pulled so they can hook them up, I will have a real phone for the first time in 7 years.

THEN, I met Mimi at WalMart out on the Periférico. First shock on living in a stick house is how many of the same things you need to buy. I needed 3 bottles of hand soap for the bathrooms. While buying those I realized that at some point I would also need 3 bottles of hand lotion too. I'm not even going to think about the 3 sets of hand towels and the bath towels. We bought 3 small waste baskets for the bathrooms, don't ask about those unless you want to hear about fosa septicas and toilet paper and stuff that sensitive NOB's don't like.

Thanks to Nancy and Theresa I knew that there are ready made covers for washing machines and dryers that protect them from dust in the dry season. I went searching and yes, there they were so we bought one of each in a lovely mauve oilcloth. Theresa, thank you for offering to make them for me but once I knew how easy they were to buy I decided I'd save you the effort and just take lots of cuttings from your garden instead :) Oh, and if you think I don't pick naco oilcloth, think again. Mimi and I have been threatening for years to have t-shirts made that say "Las Nacas de Akumal."

Then we bought 4 sponges, one for each sink, bottles of stuff for cleaning wood and leather and glass. I'm waiting on buying the mops and brooms and toilet brushes, I have high expectations not to be the one using these things and I will let she who does the work pick the product.

Also, door stops, baskets for garden tools, rubber baby buggy bumpers to keep the doors from slamming so hard in the wind, things to stick on the walls and hook climbing plants on, spray paint because I don't like the color of a table I bought, I can't remember any more. Except, we then bought a bunch of food too since we haven't been to the grocery store in over a week. I was actually surprised that all this only cost us $2000 pesos, I was afraid I'd need to hit the ATM yet again.

By this time, almost 10pm, I was exhausted, my knees hurt, my head hurt and I realized that CostCo hot dog was all I'd eaten. We came back to the RV and had turkey and cheese and apples with peanut butter. I wish I could say I was shopped out but tomorrow I have another list of things that must be purchased. Tomorrow's list includes towel racks, hooks, and TP holders and again they have to be duplicated 3 times.

How I know the feeling of buying in multiples. With us it's for our B&B and our rental apartment - and now with guests coming and going at different times, I'm constantly checking supplies. There's nothing I hate worse than being upstairs and needing something to clean with that is downstairs. And with my condo back in Canada, sometimes I just can't remember which kitchen actually has that one thing I need to cook something I only prepare once in a while.

But it's all so much fun to plan and shop, and wow - only $2000 pesos? That's incredible. Here's a tip on towels - don't buy them at Walmart - they are FULL of lint that doesn't stop producing until about 10 washings. Or maybe buy the more expensive ones - we went for middle of the road and are still sweeping up lint bunnies.

Have fun! I love reading your blog about this adventure. Having been through a similar thing myself, I can relate to a lot of it (although I think you guys did a lot more planning with a more experienced builder). I'm envious!

It seems endless for a while, I remember. Lists on top of lists.

Hopefully you don't have to hang up all the tp holders and everything...we did, and sheesh, learning about concrete walls has a learning curve... If you do have to hang them yourselves, all I can say is you need an impact drill.

Congratulations on such a wonderful home.

Okay, no washer and dryer covers. Hahaha, Las Nacas de Akumal! I love it.
I got an email about a moving sale. I will pass it on to you, if Debi hasn't already.
regards.

Something Kate alluded to, I'm kind of a sheet and towel slut. I probably won't buy towels at WalMart although I was looking at the ones they have now at CostCo. It's so hard to tell much about them from the skimpy labels and with all the sizing in them you can't even tell how thick they are. I hadn't thought about lint production, yuck!

For now, I'm happy to use the towels we have in the RV. Sheets are another issue though as the bed in the RV is a queen and at the house they are kings. I bought 2 sets of sheets at CostCo which should be enough for now.

We don't have to install the bath stuff, although Mimi would probably enjoy the job and she has the tools. We did hang one thing on the wall the other day, it is a whole different thing to hang stuff in concrete than in drywall.

Thanks Theresa, I'm so stoked to go to a garage sale! I might have to set the alarm and go early.

It really makes my day to read your blog just to see what you two are up to. The comment about you being a sheet and towel slut almost sent me over the edge. I am at work and I was laughing so loud my neighbor asked me what was so funny! Sounds like you are having a blast stocking and furnishing the house...sorry I can't feel sorry for you though, I would much rather be doing that than to be working! Someday (we hope)we can take off in the RV and not worry about having to come back to work....looking forward to a visit someday in your georgeous house..
