Juan asking me about my neighborhood in the comments yesterday reminded me of this picture. The other day Sheila, a friend I met online who is also renovating a couple houses here, showed us a wonderful botana bar only a block and a half from the house.

Botanas are appetizers and bars that specialize in them provide them for free as long as you order drinks. It's traditional here in Yucatan and a wonderful tradition it is. I will get some more pics of Las Ruinas soon, it looks unassuming from the street. There are 2 areas, the bar (generally men only) and the familia area which has a nice open patio and music.

Mimi had some in-laws in town, friends who are her nieces inlaws actually, and we all went over to meet Sheila and her friend. They really stack up the plates and the food doesn't stop coming until you stop eating. Can you believe all the food on that table? All free. It's a bit of a culinary excursion, all of it was good but there are occasionally bits that I'd prefer not to eat. Pig's ears in sauce was one, it tasted fine but the consistency was not ok for me.

We liked it so much we went back the next day with the Dodwell's. They had a good time too. It could be a regular spot for us, hopefully no more than a couple times a week because afterwards the rest of the afternoon is shot.

Paula has better pictures on her blog which you should go and read anyway. It's a good blog about their move to Chelem, spiced with that wry British wit. Also, she has wonderful pictures of our Tita and her best cat buddy Barney.

Amiga I have heard of making a pig's ear of it - but eating a pig's ear - can't you nearly see through them - are they like potato chips - piglet chips?

Some times it is great to be a vegetarian.

I have to be honest, had I known it was pig's ear I would have never tried it. I thought it was some kind of other pork with sauce. When it got in my mouth and I felt the kind of chewy, rubbery, bits... I spit it in my napkin. The sauce was good though.

They offer quite a few dishes that are vegetarian, some with egg or fish though. Their ceviche is excellent, and there is guacamole, cucumbers in vinegar, pasta in tomato sauce, and beets. Plus other meat dishes like panuchos with turkey. I can't stand beets but others say they are very good. Bleh! I think I'd rather eat the pig ears.

The pig's ear is in adobo sauce. Or at least it was the time that we went there. The food is good but the music is way too loud for me!

I would love to find a place like that here. I'm sure they exist. I'll have to do some exploring!

The name is Las Ruinas and it is on a corner of Calle 69 between Calle 70 and Calle 72. I think I should go over there again ;) and take some more pictures for a blog post.

Oh my gosh you guys, La Ruinas is one of our favorite places. The waiters even wave at us now if we drive by.

Mil gracias, I've added that onto our Merida notes.... If we see you there, I'll send over a margarita or suchlike to thank you for all the enjoyment I've taken from this blog.
