Isn't Tita cute with her new name tag? All the critters got new name tags with the correct phone numbers for both Mérida and Akumal.

The dogs had tags with my old cell number on it which I lost when I got the iPhone.

Tita doesn't seem to mind wearing her jewelry, along with her rainbow harness. She's so stylin' - she even has a matching leash.

I think you could call the end of a project like this house 'the doldrums', like that area in the ocean when it seems that nothing moves. There are things happening though, today we got the box springs for our bed and unfolded the memory foam mattress so it can fluff up and air out.

I was appalled at the cost of the stupid box springs. All they do is hold up the mattress and have feet. No one ever sees them, no one lays on them, it doesn't matter if they are made of old dog hair really. So, why do they cost over $1500 pesos each? I walked out of one store at that price. I finally got them - you need TWO single ones for a king size bed - at Costco for a couple hundred pesos less. At least I get a 2% rebate from Costco, but still, these things are not worth that price.

To make it worse, when we got the feet screwed onto them we discovered that they are warped and one foot doesn't come even close to the floor. After unscrewing it some and adding the weight of the mattress it is more or less on the floor. Shoddy, overpriced crap, that's what it is. I was contemplating a piece of plywood with some Home Depot feet on it, I still think it would have worked but Mimi talked me out of it. For one thing, the bed would have been really low unless I got giant feet for it. I wasn't sure that would look too cool.

So, we have a bed. We could sleep at the house theoretically. We also have some gas in the tank. After a week of the gas companies not showing up, apparently one showed up last night. Mimi figured that out when she saw the huge black marks on the front of the house from their hose. She went up and checked the tank and it only showed 20% full. Why would you only have a little gas put in the tank when it is such a hassle to get them to come out at all?

When she called about it they said they thought they had put 50% in the tank. Now, I have 2 questions. Why would you only put 50% in, why not just fill the thing? and... where the hell did the other 30% go? Is there a leak? an open valve? I'm not at all tempted to sleep there as you can imagine. I missed a call back from the job boss tonight so I'm sure there is an explanation. Whatever. I don't really even care what the explanation is I just want the damn tank full and no leaks.

The laundry room is torn up again, at my request. I know, it is only a laundry room, no one would see it but the maid if we were a 'normal' Mexican family.

Well, we're not. We're weird gringas and we even do our own laundry most of the time. We don't always shut the doors to these service areas and, what can I say, the problems in there bugged the shit out of me.

The water turn off valves are standard, outside, garden hose type valves and they were about 6" above the top of the washer. Why couldn't they be below the washer? Out of sight?

The clincher though are the 2 fugly, faucets that are at the sink. I asked the plumber the other day why it wasn't a mix faucet so you could adjust the hot and cold. That's when he told me that both of them were cold water! WTF?!

After I was reassured that there is hot water a mere 4' away at the washing machine, well, it made even less sense.

Add that the vent from the dryer didn't line up right with the vent hole so it couldn't be pushed next to the counter or back against the wall. It just wasn't going to work for me.

Its all getting torn out and redone. Silly gringas!

My theory on the partial propane tank fills is this - because they do the same here to us - most people, certainly in our Colonia, can't really afford a fill-up - they get gas as they get money.

When I am here and they fill the tank - they always seemed to be surprised that I want the whole tank filled - this thing only holds about 85 gallons of propane - which lasts us about six months - but why would I want to hunt those guys down and do the filling thing anymore than as little as possible?

Pretty sure it is others don't fill for the expense.

Ah, the dread "En YucatáM no estamos acostumbrados ha....¨
I don´t know why you would be so trifling as to want things done correctly to start with!! Good for you, if we ever do another house, we are going to be more demanding, not nasty but demanding of better quality.
So does this mean that your table and mirror are done adorning my entry way? LOL they certainly impress anyone who stops by.

Theresa

OK - First - Tita looks adorable!
Second - stick to your guns, if it bothers you now, it will bother you later.
The 2 cold water faucets are because it is a 2 tub sink; one for each side. Local thinking - it's a laundry room, why would you run hot water to a sink to wash clothes?
At least your faucets are nice and high so you can attach a piece of cut off garden hose to it to use like a sprayer, and to keep from getting sprayed because those outdoor style faucets really spray. Mine is mounted to close to the sink so I can't use the 'attachment'. I got a shallow batea sink also, and will switch it as soon as I am ready for the construction mess. They look great, but it really isn't practical in my pantry.
Can't wait for the tour, call me you will be there - I'll walk up, bring Tech to check out your garden.

I knew I should have checked with you Debi before I decided which sink... pfttt!!!

Now I'm wondering if I want one of those outside faucets left there for a hose to water plants?

Theresa has the answer, there are 2 phrases in Spanish that I hate to hear:
en Yucatán no estamos acostumbrados a...

Lo que pasa es...

My brain just shuts down when I hear either of those.

instead of paying home depot from cute little feet--you could do what i have doen for the last twenty years....get six cinder blocks three for each side --then a sheet of plywood and then the mattress --- makes the bed the right height and no expensive box springs.

Here no one uses box springs. Everyone uses a wooden bed frame with slats across it. They are on legs.

Good news! The gas guys actually did you a favour! I watched Presidente Calderón last night on the tv. One of the things that he is doing to help the people is that he is lowering the price of LP gas by 10%! yup, so when you do fill your tank it will be 10% cheaper!!
Also he put a hold on gasoline prices for 2009, this is the price, it won't get any higher!

Theresa

The wooden bed frames are available here as well but they are pine. Having pine around in the tropics is like putting up a sign for the termites "all you can eat, free." I'm trying to keep the soft woods at a minimum to keep them away. The blocks would have worked, I didn't think of them actually.

Thanks Theresa, I went and read the news on gas prices. So, Yay!! I can pay 10% less when I fill it up. That's not an insignificant amount, I got a really big gas tank so I wouldn't have to fill it very often. Still, I have to call them and hope they come.

One detail about getting gas in the centro is that the trucks can't come into that area until after 10pm. So, you call and you keep the front window open and hope you hear them IF they come.

I'll believe the hold and reduction on gas prices when I see it. I doubt that Isla will abide by it. Everything is a monopoly here.

When we had the farm, the gas company would only put enough gas in to equal 20%. They never explained why. But they did come out faithfully once a month and top it off. Putting the bill nicely in our door.

I wonder if you got charged for the 50%?

We got charged for 150 litros, which would be half a tank on the more usual 300 litro tank. We got a big 500 litro tank though, so who knows how they thought about it. The job boss told me something about having to put a small amount in first because it was under pressure and the pressure had to bleed off. It made no sense to me, but much could have been lost in translation. We live off propane in the RV and you don't have to 'bleed off' any pressure. Whatever.

Thanks you for starting my day with a good giggle! Two cold water faucets!! Classic!! Sometimes I question my sanity so it's nice to read that I am not the only one with unreasonable expectations!

The house is gorgeous, so your struggles are not in vain.

Think of it this way: if there had been a leak, you would have lost only a half tank of gas, not a full tank.

you only fill propane tanks up to 80% to allow for expansion.if the tank gets to hot and the gas expands there is a presure relief valve that would allow the gas to escape propane is heavier than air so it will pool to a low spot just waiting for a spark to come by.
