We went to the fair! I've been talking about it for weeks and this afternoon Stephen, Paula, Mimi and I went off to find the Yucatan state fair. It's in a small town on the outskirts of Mérida, my iPhone gps and mapping program got us there flawlessly. God I love this phone.

Anyway, it's huge. Really a city of shops and restaurants and carnival rides and artesania and god knows what else. I don't think we saw much more than half of it. We walked around and ate and people watched and shopped. I had a blast. I want to go back again before it closes at the end of the month.

There were Boy Scouts marching around.

Bicycles

Incredible mannequins

Real people pretending to be mannequins

The usual rides

You could even get your hair cut on the midway

I wish I had gotten a picture of the wedding dress shop that was there as well. Who would think to go to a fair to buy a wedding dress? You could buy mattresses as well, just a few steps away.

Also any number of gadgets and gizmos and dozens of things with your name stamped on them. You could play all the carnival games and win a stuffed animal for your sweetie or shoot air guns and make dioramas of Vicente Fernandez light up and start singing. I really wanted to get a picture of 4 state police with their M16s in hand watching some guys shooting the air guns. Didn't seem like a good idea though. I did ask them if they could do better with their weapon and they laughed.

We came home with a weird assortment of stuff, little floaters with chlorine tablets for our tinaco, some Arnica gel, a wooden smasher for the mint in a mojito, a beautiful hand painted Quetzale bird t-shirt for Mimi and a jar of tamarind syrup to make agua tamarindo. It was a great evening.

Looks like you had great fun! Loved the pics!

Oh Great - I was waiting to go with friends yesterday, then they said they didn't want to go. Let's go together.
Last year I got a Tetanus shot there, with a coupon for the follow-up at tthe IMSS office.
I do love that Fair.

Wow, your fair sounds even better than the San Miguel Fair. I wish I would have been there with my camera. How long will it be open? We will be in Merida on Dec 3.

Your day sounds so wonderful... but I'm sitting here... southern Ontario, it's freezing, windy, no hope for the climatically-persecuted until March (Yucatrip) and I envy you so much. Write more, longer.... puleeze.

Fned, the food was wonderful. I had an elote con crema, queso y chili right away and Mimi got a marquesita con nutella. We passed on the day glo cotton candy and we even passed on the beer booth - we thought we'd come back but never did. Then we decided to have a real meal and picked a restaurant that said they specialized in food from Jalisco. That's what is kind of cool, you can get the usual Yucatecan stuff but also foods from other parts of Mexico that aren't as common here. Frijoles charro y alambre suiza is what I ordered. I almost went for the pozole because it was getting kind of cold but I resisted. I'm trying not to eat carbs like tortillas but the ones that came with my alambre were sooo good and so fresh, I ate 3 of them. I did resist the incredible pay y flan in another booth and I resisted the paletas that were everywhere so I think I did pretty well.

Debi and Theresa, I'm up for going again with you guys, maybe on Wed? I've got something I have to do on M & Tu.

Billie!! You are coming to Merida?? I would be so thrilled to meet you. Can we meet for dinner or lunch or just anytime or place you want. Shoot, I'd even get up before 10am to meet you and that is the ultimate sacrifice! I'm going to put my cell number here, 999-278-0968. I think I used to have your email address but I lost most of my email earlier this year and I can't find it. Maybe we could have a blogger lunch with Theresa and Debi and Paul, the man in the hammock? Poor Kathy will have to weep from up in California. I'd be happy to organize it if you let me know if you are interested and what day is possible. Oh, my email is jharlan at the same baddog dot com domain that this blog is on.

American Mommy and Rummy, I went to another cool thing today and I'm going to write it up a little later. Chocolate and Orchids! Does it get any better?

Yes, I feel 100% better than I have in a very long time. I should have posted that but I so hate talking about my health. It's good though, I have more energy and feel really good. Now, I have no excuse not to exercise more. I haven't really gotten to that yet although I am walking more just because it doesn't exhaust me anymore.

I love the fair! Especially the building where they sell waste baskets full of stuff to the highest bidder! Sorry I missed it this year but thanks for the update.

And if Billie is coming to lunch, I want to come too!

Billie, I really think you don't want to come to Merida anytime before December 16th. really. I think there is an embargo or something on folks from SMA until then. I'm pretty sure I read about it in Por Esto.

But after December 16 - totally fine.
