Our friends Sky and Mike flew back to LA on Monday. On the way to the airport in Cancun we stopped for lunch at the Cueva del Chango. It's the restaurant connected to the nursery where I found the mysterious blue flowered vine (Petrea volubilis).
That day I didn't go into the restaurant so I was excited to see the landscaping. It's incredible!
There are waterfalls and ponds and dripping rocks and a creek that runs throughout the space. I was most enthralled with the ferns with their roots attached to the rocks. I really want to try some of that around the pond in Merida.
They also had quite a few orchids, my new obsession. They were growing attached to beams and tree trunks and old tree stumps.
I'm hoping that I can get some to attach to the rock wall in the back. I've been spending a lot of time reading about different types and trying to figure out what will grow in which part of the house.
The orchid world is huge, and the people in it are... well, interesting. I'm not the type to get involved in showing and breeding orchids but I am impressed with how devoted so many people are to this hobby. I've had a few orchids before, they never lived very long up in northern California. I doubt I'd want to grow them if I didn't live in an area where they can do well without a lot of special equipment.
Mainly I want to see them naturalized and growing outside, hopefully blooming too. That's the rub, getting them happy enough to bloom well.
At any rate, getting interested in orchids instead of smoking, drinking and eating has worked OK so far. I've lost another 2 kilos. I feel great, I'm optimistic that this last round of antibiotics has done the trick. Either that, or the orchids.. who knows?

Jonna, I'm really enjoying reading about your new hobby, orchids. Being here at Jojoba Hills, orchids are out of the question, but I've become fascinated with succulents. It's fun to read about a certain plant and start looking for them, especially the hard-to-find ones. It's amazing how many people will give you plants once they find out you're interested. And, yes, I think it does help your health. The post-cancer healing process has begun for me and I think having something like plants as a hobby helps more than we realize (of course it doesn't hurt having John spoiling me either! ;^) By the way, I have hair again and it's wildly curly! I'm talking little ringlets. It looks silly but I'm enjoying it. Keep the orchid pictures coming!

Succulents are a great one, they come in so many odd shapes and colors they are fascinating.
I'm so glad to hear about your ringlets and that you are on the healing road. Mimi and I have talked about you several times and thought we should call and then we don't. We are bad like that, we get so easily distracted and forget what we were going to do. Seeing you comment was wonderful.
Jamie's Mom is SERIOUSLY into orchids. She sells and goes to convention things. I think you've pegged them. :)
Shit. Can't remember what I was going to write. Too much (only a GLASS) of red medicine. :P
TQM!
Blah, blah, blabbity blah . . . I had a blast and am looking forward to coming to Merida, meeting Teresa, etc.
Cya,
Mike
I used to work with a woman whose husband raised orchids not only for show but to sell to florist. They had a humongous greenhouse in Battleground, WA. Imagine the cost to keep the climate controlled and the water bill. She told me once about 5 years ago what those cost were. I can’t remember but it was a ton of money.
Good to hear that you are feeling better.
Glad to hear you are feeling better. I understand how these gardening obsessions get started. I am supposed to be leaving this house behind, but I have spent the last few weekends preparing my rock garden for a full replanting -- as if I will ever see the full results. Logic should simply be abandoned.
Did you know Dueva del Chango has a Most Interesting website with a wonderful location map if you should ever need to tell someone.

That's a great link, thanks for posting it. As with most Mexican business sites, something I don't see as much of on US sites, it is Flash heavy and full of music and animations. It does show much of the restaurant though, very nicely.
I can't wait to try it!! I really liked the website (though I did have the sound off) and the menu looks fabulous. Always happy to see that perros are welcome.
Jonna...what are their prices like?
Cheryl
p.s. Twas great to see you two in Akumal! We've been home for a couple of weeks now...just catching up on my favorite blog...from the bottom up! :)
