The local forum for Merida has gone away and I'm in withdrawals. I do love forums but more than that, this one had the information and recommendations from hundreds of expats in its past files that were invaluable. I've met so many wonderful people through it as well. It's a huge hole in my daily life. Also, when I'm in a fix and trying to find something quickly I have no easy way to do it. I could call a bunch of the great people I've met here and ask them personally but it seems rather inefficient and kind of intrusive. So, I've decided to do my asking on my blog and hope that some of the readers who are local can help me out.
The first and most immediate thing I need is a good insurance agent who carries ING. I'm partial to that company for car insurance and (shhhh...) my Mexican insurance on the jeep expired TODAY! Sheeet! So, anyone in Merida know a good agent I can call tomorrow and hopefully get my butt covered? I do have a good agent in Playa del Carmen who covers our little Mexican truck but I thought it would be better to start with one here. Because... I am also looking for ING medical insurance as I've heard good things about it. If I don't find someone here tomorrow, I'll call my agent and insure the jeep and RV out of Playa.
Mimi returned today, she seems fine although the procedure sounds horrible. She had her gums lifted, bone grafted, stitches between all the teeth in one quadrant of her mouth. She has 3 more quadrants to do still, at least she gets several weeks break between them.
I met Henry at the house and then hung around awhile longer to wait for Mimi's bus. It's really convenient that the bus station is just a block and a half away. If I ever decide to get over my bus aversion I might try it, it certainly seems efficient, comfortable and easy. They tore out the sidewalk in front of the house while I was there. It was damaged and they are installing lights and want to fix the slope away from the house. No problem, get the guys with the pick and just break it out. There would have been dozens of permits and signs and yellow tape required to do that in the US - what we had were a couple of orange cones.
I took a walk around the block while I was waiting for Mimi and discovered we have a Mystic Temple just a half block away. The signs on the window say "Feng Shui - Love - Aromatic Candles - Mantras - Amulets - Incense - Quartz - Luck - Books - Irrigations" Irrigations? WTF? Well, it was all in Spanish so maybe there is another meaning that my dictionary isn't giving me. The word is Riegos if anyone else has more info. What's coming to my mind is not too pleasant. The sign in the window also said they are looking for employees, the whole place looks new and very clean and tidy. Maybe I should have them come over and check the feng shui, say a couple mantras and maybe do some irrigating to see if it gets the house done this year.

Morning Jonna,
You know Henry's father is an insurance agent. I don't know if he represents that particular company. If not, my good friend Evita also sells insurance through her job with Inbursa. I'd be happy to give you her number...she speaks great English. She also handles investments, bank accounts...a whole array of things.

Jonna - I wonder why you use an agent when you can insure over the Internet? I think I remember you have had a fender bender or two - so maybe the insurance over the net is no good - what do you know?
What happen to the Forum? Of course we always enjoy your participation on the VivaVeracruz Forum - but I know we are small and far from home.
I have an ING agent, I don't know how good he is. He just comes when I call him to renew the policy LOL. When we had our little choque I called the ING number and they sent someone right out!
So call me!
regards,
Theresa
ps. I don't mind if you call me when you have questions. It isn't intrusive, we are friends afterall and that is what friends are for!

Thanks guys, I didn't know that about Henry's father, I guess I should check that out too.
I want ING because they were so great when I had my little choque with the egg truck - only thing is they were the other guy's agent ;) I've only had the one fender bender Juan and it was handled well, the ING agent just got there faster.
I'm not convinced that it is entirely correct for me to have tourist insurance when I have an FM3, that's why I was going to switch from Lewis and Lewis online. Otherwise, I'm very happy with them.
Guess I will pick up the phone when I finish this, it just seems so much more natural to find stuff out on line than on the phone. Weird.
oh GAWDS I'm sick about MI! There was so much good information there. We used a guy from Merida to do our palapa hurricane insurance - he is Peninsular Seguros - fuckaduck - I can't find his name/our policy. lmk if you want it. LOVING THE COLOR!
For your Insurance needs call Julieta Morales

Wow! This is working really well!
I just got off the phone with Julieta, thanks for backing up the recommendation Debi. Theresa knew her from the IWC as well and she was in the Living in Merida book I just bought at the benefit for Abrazos Abiertos. She's sending me a quote in a few minutes.
Love you guys!!
If you are talking about Henry Ponce, yes his father is one of the top ING agents.
See you soon
If you have out of state plates you have to have tourist insurance. You cannot buy it online if you have a Yucatecan driver's license only if you have a NOB one. Confusing, eh?
regards,
Theresa
I was against the wall in needing to get some insurance today, so I didn't have a chance to call Henry and ask about his father. I will talk to him before I buy the medical insurance.
As it turned out, Julieta was very nice and got a quote from another company that was double the coverage ($50k vs $100k) for $20us more. I said yes to the 6 month policy so we could go and pick up the laundry. :)
I think all insurance for foreign plates is called tourist insurance but Lewis and Lewis mails your policy to your US address and I think that is a requirement. They only sell NOB. When I had the bang up with the egg truck, they required the original of my policy and not a fax or printed copy. All of that together made me wonder if I was legitimately covered since I live in Mexico and don't have a tourist visa.
The price is higher than Lewis & Lewis, I am going to keep looking around. I do think I will be better served by a local agent and a policy that recognizes I live in Mexico. I hope I don't have to find out for reals.
About the Merida website, it is a great loss.
Some of us have migrated to yolisto.com.
The more-er the better-er, I think.
Love the colors.
Three weeks from this very minute we will on Isla de Mujures, decompressing from NOB life. Yippee :)
Loving the second photo with the stripes. Who knew you could be so artsy fartsy! Now we just have to teach you how to do crafts!
Theresa, are you ready for a challenge?! LOL!
Jonna - have you checked one of Rolly's recommendations? The guys we use know we live in Mexico and always send a copy of the policy imbedded in the email. I just email them (usually after the policy expires and I'm frantic) and they renew immediately. We use MexicoBob

We get an annual plan. I'll have to look into it more next year and see if we want something local. I've actually never used the policy. Actually, I 1/2 heartedly tried to once but never called the guy.
