Oh Hai! I missed you too!
I was a leetle depressed because after taking all those tests and while waiting for the results, I got sick again. Fever, chills, then what felt like the beginning of yet another UTI.
I am worn down from all this and it has not helped my outlook one bit. If you add to that the fact that I am mourning my life as I knew it and bemoaning the fact that I have to give up everything I really like this year - woe is me.
It's not really true that I have to give up everything I like but when I'm laying in bed freezing with chills and my joints aching from fever I can very easily convince myself that not being able to smoke cigarettes, eat whatever I want and drink the same is giving up everything that makes life worth living. Add in that I need to change my favorite pastime from laying around with a laptop to doing something that involves actually moving... well, the end is nigh.
But then, I went to the appt with my doctor and she told me that, even before the last episode, I had a low grade infection in my bladder. It could have been there through all of this last year + of feeling like shit and getting sick all the time. She thought the fever was probably it moving into my kidneys as well. The antibiotics were not enough or long enough or something to really get rid of it and so it periodically flared up. She put me on a different antibiotic for 8 days and then 3 days after I finish that she wants another test to be cultured to make sure whatever it is is either gone or they know exactly what it is.
I've been trying to get that culture test done for over a year. Some of you may remember my frustration with the doctor in California last summer for refusing to do that but insisting that I just go on yet another run of antibiotics. The good news is the ultrasound showed the key organs looking pretty good. I have some 'mud' in my gall bladder but no stones, so whatever I had last month was not a gall bladder attack. I have low cholesterol, normal blood sugars, everything is functioning and few things out of the normal.
After 7 years of living in Mexico half the year or more, I have only one, very common parasite that usually causes no problems. It's called endolimax Nana and does pretty much nothing in the way of harm to you.
Even so, la doctora wants to treat it as she says in some cases it can contribute to not feeling well. I decided if I have it then Mimi probably does too and she was resistant to the idea of collecting her poop every day for 3 days. So, she's taking the meds as well and our friend Nana is on the way out. Oddly enough, I started feeling much more optimistic about life as soon as the appointment was over and even before I started taking the antibiotics. I've decided to replace smoking, drinking and eating with growing orchids - we'll see how that goes.
Oh, and I've lost 9.5 kilos since the lung doctor told me I had to lose weight to improve lung function. That was about 6 weeks ago. The week or more of almost no eating with the e coli and all certainly gave me a boost along the way but I have continued to lose since then. Unfortunately, that's where the no drinking and not eating much comes in. I need to get more of the moving around stuff going and hopefully that will be easier without this constant infection.
Let's see, what else have I done to improve my health? Oh, I went to the convenient vaccine clinic across the street from the doctor and had both a pneumonia vaccine and a flu shot. They even gave me a little booklet like we have for the dogs to keep track of all vaccinations. So, there's the health update and hopefully I will continue to feel better and finally get rid of this year of getting sick.
I have nothing but high praise for the doctors and facilities I've been to here in Merida. I have to say, they make Kaiser in Marin look rather shabby. If you add the fact that each and every doctor has spent a lot of uninterrupted time with me listening, questioning, discussing and really paying attention then you will begin to see why I dread ever having to see another doctor in the US. These are experts in their fields, using top of the line equipment and yet still showing compassion and humanity and caring. Damn! I forgot that was even possible from the medical profession.
Wondering about the first picture of Señor Butt Crack? They were setting up for a big concert for youth in the parking lot next to the RV park. Mimi went over and took a bunch of pictures and I thought that one was the true gem. He's actually not mooning her, he's sitting on a drum seat testing the drums. I didn't post the pic of the drooping stomach that keeps the pants from coming all the way up. The rest are Hombre and Cuba playing here in the park, and one of Tita hiding in the grass and watching them.

Jonna, sorry about losing your life as you knew it...now that you are on the mend, how about more frequent blogs? I like your take on things....maybe you can fit the computer on the handlebars of a bicycle and blog as you pedal so as to work on the fitness and still keep us voyeurs into your life happy...KK
We are all so glad that you are feeling better and finally getting some of the answers you need. The time between your posts was getting a bit concerning. Tell Mimi that giving poop samples can be fun. Remember my story of having to do it? She should read the comments with that post. Lots of good ideas on how to do it!
I think we are going to be in Merida towards the end of November for the State Fair. Lunch with Theresa and hopefully will see you guys!
Yes indeed - more Blog entries!
I avoid doctors as usually they provide too much information - at least I think I haven't been to one in 40 years.
I am never sick, I think because I don't know any better - go figure.
That written I am glad the reports are good and you will live - very important that to all of your fans - me included.
Juan
Jonna -- What a nice morning surprise -- to see you right here on my computer. I was going to contact you last night to see if everything was all right. Now I know. Glad to have you back at the keyboard. (With the great comment you left on my blog the other day about FMTs, I knew you were around.)
Excellent news, Jonna. I knew you'd get to the bottom of it eventually.
I think focusing on the positive and the future are the way to go. And you know, if you took a drag of a cigarette now you would cough and choke. And stink. So don't let it have that romance over you, ok?
You're doing great, and the future is great.
HI!
Love your blog and like many others hope to make it your way someday.
If you have frequent UTIs try D-Mannose. It's a simple sugar that (paraphrasing here) makes the UT inhospitable or slippery to bacteria. My daughter has/had frequent UTIs and it's helped her tremendously. Google it. If you can't find it there, and think it would help, maybe someone will bring some down with them. I got it at a health food/supplement store here in BFE NOB so anyone should be able to score some for you.
Take care and get better!
coin slot pic too funny - hope you are feeling much better.
Glad you are getting to the "bottom" of things there. Hopefully the meds. will do the trick and you will be back to normal again soon.
Hi Jonna, it's good to see you blogging again. Having to give up things you love sucks. I'm going to use your struggle to make changes in your life as an example to make the changes I know I need to make in mine. Hang in there, chica.
Love and (((hugs)))
P.S. Crack kills.
Funny, all this doesn't look as bleak now as it did last week. I'm starting to consider doing stuff again that I'd pretty much given up in the last few years. Like walking places and diving.
Thanks for the good wishes, all you bloggers know that you get that mental clock going and know you've let too much time go by without blogging. Plus, there are the reminder emails ;)
Wayne, you guys had better see us if you come over here!! You really love those state fairs, maybe we'll go too this year.
Juan, I've avoided doctors as much as possible myself. I totally agree with you, hanging out with them is a sure fire way to get sick. That said, when I get sick on my own I'm the big baby that wants them to fix it NOW.
I'm never going to be one of those doom and gloom anti-everything-fun people but I do think I was late leaving the party. So Heather, if you start taking better care now you will have less to handle later. That's all.
How weird it must feel to realize you are being cared about by people you never knew existed.
We, out here in Netherland, are happy to hear you are on the mend and welcome you back to the living.
We wuz, like, worried.
9 KILOS WOW! that is great. sorry you lost it by not being able to enjoy eating. Missed hearing from you this last week or so. Get back up on the keyboard and ride baby ride. lazybeacher here.
Jonna - the photo of the guy with the "crack" reminds me of a t-shirt I saw probably 25 years ago on a Southwest airlines flight that I have NEVER forgotten. It said, "Im so horny even the crack of Dawn looks good". Maybe you could change that to Donald.......ha!
Yay!! This report sounds much more optmistic than the previous one which probably means just that: things are looking up!
So glad you're feeling better and that you're being treated by good profesionals. It sucks to be sick and scared and on top of that have to deal with unconsiderate @ssholes.
Excellent progress on the health front (I'm even jealous... lost 9.5 kilos??? Grrrr!!!!) and as Theresa from Mérida once said: humans can get used to anything after trying it out for 21 days straight... I think that is one very wise piece of advice!
Hang in there girl! We're rootin' for ya!
Fned.
I also have "mud" in my gal bladder and as a result every time I eat meat from animals that have hoofs, I experience pain that feels like someone socked me in the middle of my back on the right side. The doctors wanted me to have the gal bladder removed but I resisted. I just avoid meat from hoofed animals and I have lived pain free for two years. (Offered for what it is worth. Salud.) Christine
Glad you are feeling better. And I'm even gladder that Mimi doesn't have to collect her shit for 3 days.
Congrats on the weight loss...lets keep getting healthy shall we?
Donny and I had to change our diet years ago because of his high cholesterol and triglycerides. It seems hard at first but then you cross that hump and the really bad stuff like butter and deep fried things just don't taste good anymore. And I've discovered that there are some good fats like avocados...and dark chocolate is good for you too. So it is definitely not the end of everything good :) Hang in there...you can do it!
Will you be back in Akumal soon for the big Halloween party? Hope to see you there...and let's all get together for lunch one day.
Cheryl
Jonna,
Glad to see you back. I've been reading your blog for some time. I'm another NOB that loves Mexico. We own a small place in PDC but also love Merida. Hoping to spend more time down there soon. PatR
