Anyone know what this vine is? Mimi saw it in Cancun and took a picture for me. It's gorgeous, I'd love to know what it is.

So, again we didn't leave for Merida.

I have to confess, I've been sick for what seems like weeks. After the e-coli or whatever that was, I was starting to feel better but still not eating much when I had some kind of stomach attack. I don't know if it was my gall bladder or gas like I have never experienced. It was in the area of my gall bladder, it was incredibly painful. It lasted all of one night and the area was sore to the touch for days afterwards. I was throwing up, mostly from the pain I think. I took pain pills and all kinds of stomach pills and eventually, it faded.

Ok, that kind of spooked me and I was really cautious about eating for a few days after that. Then I started feeling like I had a bladder infection starting. That's when I really started pushing to go to Merida so I could see my doctor. We had committments though and couldn't have left until today.

The bladder pain got worse daily, I was drinking liters and liters of water and it helped a little. Not much room for food. This morning I had one more trip to Playa I had to make and we could leave. The cramps got really bad after I got up and within an hour I couldn't stand up straight or keep from making a lot of moaning sounds. So, I started taking the numb it pills that I hadn't wanted to take. I peed orange so they got there but the cramps and pain didn't let up.

Finally, I couldn't take it and we called the Roving Doctor again. He said I could come in and get a urine test and find out what the bacteria is in one day but he also said that no matter what it is the drug is going to be Cipro again. The thought of trying to ride in the car to Playa was too much. Mimi went and got me the Cipro. Of course, now that I'm on antibiotics, a test won't show anything.

Basically, I have eaten very little in weeks and I have spent most of my time laying in bed with the computer. I had some fairly good days and I've been out and about a little but it just feels like I've been sick since we got to Akumal. I keep worrying that they are all connected and I know I really need to get to my doctor and lay it all out for her and get some tests done. First though, I have to get back to Merida.

Yesterday, when we tried to light the refrigerator in the RV it wouldn't light. Mimi sprayed it and messed with it in vain. But, happily, today it lit. Things are looking up. Either the orange pee or the Cipro are taking effect and I can stand up straight and the cramps are gone. I still have that last errand I need to run in Playa but I'm going to try and do that in the morning so we can leave.

Since I'm laying all this health stuff out there for the internets, I should also say that when we were in Merida I went to the lung doctor and got the diagnosis that I expected but hoped wasn't true. I have stage 2 COPD as a result of almost 50 years of smoking. It could very easily have been much worse, like stage 3 or 4 or lung cancer. It's incurable and the best result is that you slow the advance and keep what you've got working as long as possible. Which, could be a long time. I'm not saying I'm on a time table here. One of the main things I need to do is lose weight and get in better shape. I'm sure I've made a start on the weight these last few weeks so that parts good.

OK, confession is done. Give me some Hail Mary's and I'm out of here. Don't expect this to become a woe is me medical blog, this is as HDR* as I intend to get. If you don't know what HDR is then you are not a child of the 60's. On the other hand, if you do know what it is - dude, you're old!

Ok, you start off with pretty flowers just to put us at ease, right??? Oh Miss Jonna! I'm so sorry you've been feeling so bad and definitely concerned about you and the lung condition!!! I wish I could be there to help Nurse Mimi, let me know if I can do ANYTHING from here, ok?

And hey, what's with coming to Cancun and not saying hi? ;-)

Big hugs to you and Mimi, take it easy and take care! Sending you warm healing vibes girl.

Oh, Jonna, I'm so sad to hear how ill you've been...and you've STILL been managing to blog. You're amazing.

I don't know what HDR is. I don't know what COPD is either, is it like emphysema? I want to know, do you still smoke? If you stop, will it help you? I'm sorry if I'm nosy. It makes me nervous is all.

You know I'm here in Playa, not far away at all. Right now I don't have drivable wheels, but I can easily get to Akumal at nights and on weekends. Mimi has my numba. Don't be afraid to call for any reason. I mean it.

hey toots...... it's a good thing i've learned my medical-ese. (and can now give intramuscular injections too!) i would have said kidney stone for the pain... if it is a moving stone, it will hurt like hell and then if it stops moving you can go months without it hurting again. maybe a KUB or CT?

the flower... looks like some type of orchid or one of those alien flowers.... a passion flower of some sort????

jonna.... you need anything, you let me know... you know where i am.
love to you and mimi

Sounds miserable. One of the consequences of having food poisoning is that between the poisoning, and the antibiotics, all of the healthy bacteria is wiped out, and something like 75% of your immune system is in your intestines. You need to really bulk up on pro-biotics, (acidophilus, etc), to rebuild your resistance.

The last time I was Mexico I had a pretty bad case of food poisoning (but I brought it with me from the US, so no fault to Mexico), anyway, I was sick on and off for the next six months, when I happened to find myself back in Mexico and picked up a liquid acidophilus product that was great. Only, I can't remember the name. The best I can tell you is it comes in an orange and white box, and is packaged in vials. If you can find it, drink one or two of those a day for the next two weeks. It did wonders for me.

I have been following your blog for some time and you have me in tears.
Take care of yourself. The best exercise I have found is power walking for one hour a day.
I am also a smoker, and being almost 44, have found my lung capacity is decreasing fast. The walking does help, but bottom line is we have to quit smoking!!

So I had the same pain in the area of my gallbladder as well about 2 years ago shortly after a trip to Cancun. I blogged about it, but I'll just say it was in June 2006 and won't link. Anyway, huge pain, tears, vomitting from the pain, horrific, and as it turns out, it was actually my colon - blockage. From way too much cheese that trip. It eventually passed. I hope that was your malady too and I hope that you continue to feel better. Saying my Hail Marys for you ~

I don't know what HDR is either...but do know what COPD is.....and I suppose I'm a child of the 60s since I'll be 65 next month????

Dear Jonna, I'm so sorry you have been so very ill!!! Hope you are much better really soon. Amazing that you can keep blogging....but miss it terribly when nothing is posted for awhile as you wouldn't believe how often I check on you and Mimi.

That plant looks like some type of Jasmine to me - except the Jasmine I have known wasn't a vine - more of a bush....but the flower looked rather like that. Does it smell really pretty???

Hang in there.
Big Get Well Hugs

Jonna -- I have been thinking about you all afternoon since I read your blog. I am not a person who goes to the doctor very often -- maybe once every five years or so. But I strongly recommend that you go. From reading your posts over the past year, I think I know why. But do it -- if not for you, for us. You are a true chum to us all.

Thanks all. I'll try and answer the questions.

I quit smoking on Jan 1 this year, still chew nicorette gum but no smoke. I quit because I was having a hard time breathing.

COPD is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and can be either or both emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Basically you have less little feelers in your lungs. You can't grow new ones but you can use the ones you've got more efficiently. There are drugs, I'm on one of them a Spiriva inhaler once a day. I'm glad I am not at the stage where I need more.

If you knew how many vitamins I take you would be shocked. So, yes I take probiotics and I've been doubling and tripling on them since the first round with the Cipro. I almost think it is a waste while I'm taking the Cipro but I will double up again when I'm done. I also eat the yogurt based probiotics usually, not lately cuz dairy hasn't appealed to me since this all started.

I don't think the vine is a clematis, doesn't really look like a jasmine either although there are a lot of different types. I don't know how it smells, I haven't seen it only Mimi. I'm going to google on the theme of orchid vine and see what I find as it does look a little like one so maybe it has that as a common name.

HDR means Heavy Deep and Real with bold and underlining! It was shorthand in the hippy days for that kind of conversation that was well, heavy, deep and real. Commonly used in sentences like "don't get all HDR on me now I'm too stoned".

Hi Jonna,I don't know what the plant is either, but I if Mimi grabs a good sprig before you return we can try to root it, I have some rooting enzyme similar to rootone.
Your tummy problems sound like a nightmare, did you look up the negative reactions from any of your meds to see if that is what it could be?
I had a kidney stone once, I thought that I had broken a rib, it was that painful!
Hurry back to Merida, we are missing you!

Theresa

We have a winner! Kathe found the vine. Check her link and this one
http://www.toptropicals.com/html/toptropicals/plant_wk/petrea.htm

It has lots of names in English, Sandpaper Vine (rough leaves), Queen's Wreath, Tropical Wisteria, Blue Bird vine, and more.

Theresa, it says it is native to this area and can be invasive. I think that means if we find a piece we can root it. The one Mimi saw was somewhere in Cancun, not going back anytime soon so will start looking for it here.

We actually have 2 winners as Polly from Xcalak emailed me a link to the same vine. So, garden kudos to southern Quintana Roo, Calderitas and Xcalak!!

Plus, Mimi tells me that she didn't take that picture in Cancun, but in Playa. If she can remember where she was I will go by today with my scissors and see about a few cuttings for Theresa and I :)

Yep, the vine is petrea, known in some parts as Mexican lilac. The leaves feel like sandpaper!

I planted one in my garden in Ajijic. I have ONE photo of it which I will send you ASAP.

Now I'm going back to your post to read about how come you're sick.

tell Mimi to memorize the location so I can get a sprig also for our garden.

We'll see you guys at Star Medica in Merida on Monday, ok? We're heading over Sunday morning and staying at Yucatan Vista (I think that's it). Jamie didn't want to bring the trailer (probably a smart choice with my vertigo and his inability to drag the trailer :)) so we're in a house next to the English library.

Much love to you and Mimi and congratulations again on stopping smoking. Even with COPD2 it will help. Now we need to get Mimi off the evil weed. :)

Do you think there is any chance it was typhoid (which is why I suggested the salmonella titer)? That sticks around for MONTHS and takes FOREVER to heal from... Seriously, like 3 months (in our experience)

Oh Jonna, I'm so sorry I'm only now catching up but I add my prayers to the long list and hope that you recover(ed?) from the abdominal pain soon!! From your latest post it seems that you are on the right track to figuring out what it might be but take it easy and keep taking good care of yourself!

As for the stage 2 COPD, I'm so happy that you have quit smoking and that you are taking better care of your health. I'm all for being postive and as you say it could be worse (Stage 3, 4...). Still, keep up the good work (watching your weight and getting in shape) because we want you to get better and FEEL better soon!!

Here's thinking of you!!!

Big hugs,
Fned.
