I'm just cranking out the posts today! I want to show the house as it is now. It's a lot cleaner and easier to see for one thing, most of the debris is gone although there are still a dozen or so bags in the garage. The cave has been covered up and sits under the bags of escombro.

I was overwhelmed at how large it seems now that it is empty. I'm sure it will seem more normal sized once there is furniture in it but for now, seeing it without all the equipment and debris, it seems huge.

I'm really in love with it. The light is incredible, the flowing levels, the tiles, the shape of the kitchen hood.

This is light spilling down from one of the skylights in the office. Each corner of the room has one and the way the light washes the walls is great. Not so great is my ability to take a picture of it.

We finally seem to have decided what to do with that closed off doorway in the office, you can see the bump out in the picture. It is so that a full sized car will fit in the garage which was converted from a bedroom by previous owners. We thought of removing it, but it is really convenient. We thought of just making it a little smaller, a lot of work for little change. I think now it will have concrete shelves on either side, the top part will become a niche for art or a statue and the rest of the wall will also have places to display things as well as an area that can function as a desk.

The master bedroom tiles and floor are done, I like the green version we picked of the downstairs tiles. I didn't get a good picture but there are areas in the terrace and the counters, showers and bench in both baths will be crema maya a nice stone that comes from the Yucatan.

We walked around with the electrician and architect and checked that there are plugs where we want them, fans and chandeliers and light fixtures and where the switches are to control them. We changed some things and didn't change some others but for the most part it was done as I expected and as our last walk through had specified. I'm really pleased with Henry and his crew, they anticipate so many things and the work I see is excellent.

Mimi crawled around in the pool pump area under the stairs, tight but doable. I noticed that there wasn't a drain in there. When you open the filter, water comes out and I don't want it staying under the stairs for mosquitoes to breed in. They are putting in a drain. We were pleased to see that the pump sits in a well that is below the water level of the pool. This we asked for on the advice of our friend's Tom and Debbie as it keeps the pump primed through power outages.

A lot of work is going on off site now, the doors are all gone to the door maker. He will refinish the old ones, add hardware or repair it, and he is making new doors for the upstairs. The ironwork guy is making the window grills and railings at his shop. The glass guys are making the windows and inserts. The cabinet maker is starting on the cabinets next week.

At the house, more plumbing is being done. The solar heater for the pool is going on the roof. The water filtration and pressure system is going in, the tinaco is being delivered and mounted. The spillway and filter for the inside pond is being made, they are using part of the skimmer I brought down but not all of it as it doesn't fit right. Instead they will make part of it from concrete.

The next big change is they are going to start work on the front of the house soon. That's going to be exciting to see. The front door and garage door will be opened back up to their original height. The 1950's tiles will come off the front, new trim will go on, the plaque we had made that says Casa Ixchel and has a relief of the Mayan goddess Ixchel will go on the front along with the house number.

Oh, I forgot to add, in the last picture the guy up on the scaffold is cutting through the rock wall for 2 more round windows between the hall and the living room. When they opened up the original ones on the outside wall of the living room, they found very old round metal frames, perhaps wheels. They kept them but they are much smaller than we anticipated so they are opening 2 larger circles to the hall for more light. I love how they just get up there and start picking the stone out when they want a hole. I should have gotten a picture of that. One nice touch is that through the small windows on the far side, you can see the blooms of the neighbors huge bougainvillea perfectly framed.

Wow, it is really starting to come together. I LOVE the tiles you chose! I am so excited to see it completed...what color will you be painting my bedroom?

We haven't done much talking about wall colors yet. I want to see what Henry suggests and I'll probably go with it. He's got a great eye. Got any requests?

The tiles in the guest room have some pink, green and beige in them. I don't want pink walls, the pink in the tiles kind of disappears or looks more salmon if you don't emphasize it. So, other than pink, I'm open.

Besides, I agree with you in that the place looks HUGE!! However, I think even with furniture it will still look huge... that hall makes me imagine you guys are building a castle!!

HOW TOTALLY COOL!!!

I like pink....Hey, I hate to break it to you, but having been in your house, it's HUGE! It isn't going to shrink much when you put furniture in it.
It all looks wonderful, I can't wait to see the pond!

Theresa

but...but...it's only got FIVE main rooms!! That's what I keep telling myself, how big can a house be that only has 5 main rooms? It's tall, that's all :)

Well, and we could start a bowling league in that hallway. We actually reduced it some, we moved the wall between it and the garage about a foot to make the garage wider and line it up with the rest of the house. Plus we evened out the arches and then the pond reduces it some too.

I had this thought when we were there the other day of our pack of dogs and kitten racing for the front door when we come home and missing the turn and ending up in the pond. Or, of the kitten spending all her time trying to catch the fish in that pond. Both are possibles.

Can I say P-A-R-T-Y? A big house with such wonderful open space is going to be perfect for a party!

Our house is way bigger than we thought we wanted/needed (4,000 sf) but wouldn't you know it, we love the size. Stays cooler, places to make messes that aren't underfoot, etc. You will love it.

Oh, by the way, if you invite us, we'll come to the PARTY!

Thanks guys. Of course you are ALL invited when we have a housewarming party. We had started talking about one last March, planning to have it around the Day of the Dead. Well, it's a good thing that never took off because I'm doubting we will be in it by then.

We have about the same sq footage Nancy but that's measured Mexican style which includes everything under a roof. So, it includes the terraces and the garage. I'm not sure I like the idea of more space to mess up ;)

I'm already kind of worried about not having a door to the closet, it is open to the master bedroom. I've seen closets that Mimi occupied, I don't want to see it when I walk in the bedroom. Stuff like that we may have to change but we'll try it out first.

One thing I really like is that our shower is open floor to ceiling (18ft ceiling) to the outside and a private patio. No glass, nothing. We will have mosquito netting over the whole patio roof and the door to the outside roof will be solid on the bottom but clear on top. If you were on the roof across the street you could see someone in the shower but just their head. This gives us that wonderful view of the Cathedral while showering!

WOW, just stunning ladies!!! It is really coming together, I can't wait to see the finished product. The furbabies have lots of territory to cover there, heehee!

And oh heck yes, there better be an invite with our name on it for that housewarming! What's an appropriate gift for a resurrection of a big beautiful old house? Ah, tequila of course, lol!

Jonna, your house looks GREAT! I can't wait to see the finished product, and the ponds (inside and out). Beach Bum beat me to it...I, too, LOVE those floating stairs. I'd like to see a drawing or blueprint of the floor plan for both floors. :)
I wouldn't worry too much about Tita and the fishies. My two inside cats drink out of the betta bowl and the baby guppy bowl, and don't even seem to notice the fish are there.

I'll even hand deliver the invitation to the CancunCanuck family, and yes, tequila sounds perfect as long as you stay and help to drink it.

I too love the floating stairs, it's kind of a trademark of Henry's and they are really beautiful. I hate to even add railings on any of it but we will on some.

Henry's other trademark is incredible use of light, both natural and artificial. It's one of the things that I noticed first about his houses. He can find and get light into the deepest rooms, and have it come in looking incredible. I really love those light falls on the walls.

Thanks Sandye for the info on cats and ponds. This cat is so fascinated with water that I'm sure she will end up falling in it at least once.

James, there can nevah be too many pictures of kitteh's. Kitteh's rule. Although, I think my dogs are cute too they are just overshadowed right now by the terminal cuteness of the kitteh.
