Anyone in Playa know a good printer, large format photos? I have some pics that I need to have scanned and re-printed as the sun is damaging them. I'm hoping to get them beefed up a bit and then printed on good paper and framed with the UV protecting glass. Anyway, they are 3'x2' so I'm looking for a professional printer.

If not Playa, how about in Cancun?

If not Cancun, Merida?

I'd love to not drive them any farther than I have to but I will, they are here in Akumal.

I don't know what camera you have, but 2' x 3' is big enough to make a digital picture. Remove from behind glass, use a tripod, and get good even light and use high resolution. Then you will have an image you can e-mail for printing. You can play with colors, contrast, brightness, etc. I'm sure there is some place in Cancun that could print it for you. For fun once, I made a 2' x 3' print by printing on 8.5" x 11" paper. I think it took 9 pages which I taped together. Still hanging on a bedroom door. At least you'll have something to preserve.

Jonna- Have you tried Costco? (Is there one in Playa?) That would be my first stop I think. www.costco.com.mx (You can even email the photos through their website for printing). Walmart would be next, but I think Costco does a better job.

jonna.. bill works with prof. printers all the time and we also have a large format prof. printer as well, here at the house. Prof. printers cost a bit (the inks and work) but are most definitely worth it if you looking for top quality, archival inks, top grade paper, etc. he has a great printer here locally that he has dealt with for over 10 years. if you cant find what you are looking for there.... let me know and we can work out some details.

I would think that John and Libby of intheroo.com (or .org or something) would know. If not, maybe Michelle?

And Costco sounds good too!

And Jonna - how are your teeth/mouth? I just caught up on your blog and (to paraphrase someone we know) ManOMan! Between the lightening and the dental work you could use an IV of hoohahs! :)

Jonna, if you have a scanner yourself you should scan them into a file to preserve them before any further damage occurs. Use a fairly high resolution. Anyone with PhotoShop could then restore the colors to what they were before fading and aging.

At that point you could have your friends with the printer print them for you or you could email them to a professional printer. Costco might do it down there. If not then someplace in the USA where someone can pick them up for you. Walgreens and WalMart do a pretty good job but a professional lab could print them onto specialty paper for a higher price.

Sorry, I just noticed they are 2' X 3' so that pretty much precludes scanning them yourself. As someone else said, you can simply photograph them with a good digital camera. Place the picture on it's side to match the wider format of the camera and use a tripod. Make sure the lighting is good, the print is flat and the camera is at a perfect right angle to the print. Move in so that the frame is almost but not quite filled to get the best resolution.

Yes, I do have a scanner and I'm pretty good with PS but I was hoping not to try this at home. A couple of them will fit in my scanner but the bigger ones will not. They were taken by a friend in Chiapas of some Lancondon healers, she was a very well known photographer and she died several years ago. If she were still alive I'd ask her what to do but she isn't. I should PM Michelle or Heather and see if they have someone they use for large ads or who does the big posters around town.

Costco is only in Cancun, WalMart and Sam's are in Playa but, I'm a little dubious.

I'm off to the dentist now to see how it is going.

It finally dawned on me to ask the guy that does my framing. So, I went by there this afternoon and he gave me vague directions to a place near WalMart. I walked around the block there, talked to a nice woman at an ad agency and eventually found the place that both of them recommended. It's on 8th, just before 30th, on the right. I went in and they can do what I'm looking for including having a large format scanner. I'll take the stuff in this week and see how it goes. I seem to always pick these really hot days to go walking around in a city looking for something that might be there. It worked though, it's the Mexican Yellow Pages... ask until you find it.
