Random things about living in the tropics:*Get the largest refrigerator you can. It's amazing the stuff that you will need to keep in it in order to keep the ants and the humidity out. Like dry cat food, vitamins, candy, crackers, bread, hot sauce (yes, Mexican ants eat hot sauce if it is at all sweet), bakery goods (cold donuts are not all that good which is probably for the best), some medicines, cough drops and cough syrup, honey, butter ... if I weren't too lazy I could go open my reefer and find some more odd stuff.
*Ants will inherit the earth. In fact, they probably already own it and just haven't gotten around to evicting us yet. I've never liked ants but now, I don't even get all that excited if I realize I ate one or two. In fact, the really tiny ones I can't even see unless they move. The variety of ants is mind boggling, there are dozens of types of ants just in my condo. The electric ants are cool, they only live in electric outlets and you never see them unless you leave something edible near an outlet. Like say, the top off your toothpaste on the bathroom counter. Did I forget to say that I want the toothpaste in the refrigerator too?
OK, this isn't really tips for living in the tropics - this is just a long rant about ants but without ant pictures. Instead, you get more pictures of my cutest kitteh in the world and the great view off my deck, which more or less makes up for all the ants you can't see inside. A couple days ago, Mimi was driving and we were heading to Playa. When we got to the highway she reaches back and pulls her seatbelt around her and shortly thereafter she starts yelling and slapping at herself while I grab for the wheel to keep us on the road. It turns out that ants had built a nest in the seat belt receptacle on the floor of the jeep. This happened to be the large, red ants that bite. We safely got to the side of the road and she didn't use her seatbelt on that trip. Today, she spent the day cleaning out the jeep and found 4 separate ant nests in it.
Oh, and tourists! Sometimes locals make fun of tourists, not me of course because that's how I started out here. I do sometimes get a kick out of them, like this afternoon. I went out on the deck and saw these 2 laying on the sand with their newly arrived whiteness. But, they are so cute! They look like they are just blissed out.
In fact, here's a close up. Aren't they cute? I think they are holding hands!

Good thing they're laying in the water or the ants would drag them away. I can sure relate to the ant story. We have every variety and you're right about the small ones. If we drop a crumb on the floor it will have a black ring of ants around it in no time.
....and here in northern NY, not far from the Canadian border I have my cat food dish up on top of my hot tub (covered) inside, in the utility room,.... ants have found it1 I have bought some kind of ant poison to sprinkle all around the house's outside perimeter,.. only time will tell!
I still keep my chips, crackers and the like in the fridge here in Oregon. I got really used to cold crackers and cereal after having had to do it in Cancun. And ants are not a problem for me. But good gravy I hated waking up to teeny tiny ants all over my cracktop and kitchen counter back then!
I haven't seen many ants here in Mazatlan but I am a ziplock bag nut. Anything that isn't in a zip lock is either soggy from the humidity or full of bugs in no time. Ick.
We keep things like the jar of honey in a pan of water - the ants will not swim to it - the refrig makes the stuff too hard.
The other morningI woke up to ants crawling on my shoulder in bed - yikes! (Did they think I was dead?) And I am in Las Vegas right now - apparently borders mean nothing to hormigas.
John Calypso
Ack John! They must have thought you were dead and were just scouting for good lift spots. I'm pretty sure I have swimming ants, those would be the ones that live in the shower drain.
I hadn't realized what bait those tourists were, that would be really bad for the local economy if the ants dragged them off.
The little black circles on the counter... it's like some teacher coming along with a sharpie circling all the spots you missed when wiping off the counter. If a microscopic crumb remains, soon it has the black circle of micro-ants. Manuela told me the name of those teeny tiny ones yesterday and I've forgotten it already.
I will admit that I've grown fond of cold, cold cereal - with a cold mango in it and cold milk on a hot morning. I could adjust though if I could have the room back in the refrigerator.
When we "moved in" to our condo there were two picnic-type baskets on top of the fridge...I soon discovered why...for some reason the ants cannot or don't climb up the fridge(?) We keep our cereal, muffins, chips, snacks up there and they are totally safe.
Now how to keep the cereal from being humidified....that's another blog in itself :)
Oh yes, we've totally got the ant thing. Cinnamon does an ok job of keeping them away from the animals dishes on the floor, I sprinkle it around them and for the most part they stay away. But then you've got a pile of cinnamon on the floor and little kitty cinnamon prints. ;-)
Crazy about the ants in the jeep, I would have totally lost control!!
At our house we call it The Great Ant Attack of '08. You'll never get rid of them, you just have to decide what level of them you are willing to live with. If you keep stuff in baggies, make sure it is the double seal kind. They will gain access to single slide. I have even found them inside sealed potato chip bags! (maybe came that way from the factory??) Also, I never really thought about it, but I have never seen an ant ON my refrigerator. They make a trail around it but never on it. Have to keep that in mind.
I generally wear long pants until it gets really hot - like July or August - and while my arms and shoulders are pretty black, my legs are PASTY WHITE. There were a couple days I considered shorts, but so far, it is 77F of A/C here in the trailer and I have my fleece pants on and I'm huddled under one of the kids sleeping bags. I'm a wimp under 80F.
We almost stopped by to see you guys (we went to Tulum on Sunday) but I thought you were in Merida so we kept going home. I'm heading down this week to bring books to the library - maybe Thursday? I'm going to get a supply of coffee also if you want me to pick some up for youse guys.
oh, and ANTS? Drive me insane in the trailer so we keep no food in here. Kitchen is outside and I now simply consider ants a protein source.
Little kitty cinnamon prints - that cracks me up.
Sorry to say, our ants do climb the refrigerator. We have a microwave on top of it and they make up there too.
Harvestmoon, we return to Akumal on Wed night and I've got dental surgery at 5pm on Thurs. Come by before if you want, we'll leave around 4 to go to Playa. I'm buying some Chiapan coffee here so don't need any. I like the Chiapan better than the Veracruz I think.
