Tito is doing really well. The intake and the output are in sync, the worm medicine had no obvious effect which I consider good. I was ready with my camera though in case we had an incident like Cancun Canuck so I could photograph Mimi pulling one out of the back end.

He is running now without falling over, he actually batted his ball and tried to play with it, he comes running whenever he hears our voices... he's a doll!

We've been busy the last few days, our new gas tank has been installed and filled. That took several trips to Playa for parts, a couple days of our friend Rod climbing really scary ladders up to the 3rd floor and then drilling and welding when he got there, the finding of 2 leaks and repairs, and getting the gas company to come and fill the tank. Such fun. Really. We are now on our own gas though and that is a good feeling. No more paying a percentage of 2 buildings whether we were here or not and whether every other place was full of 6 people showering all the time and cooking. Now, we pay for what we use I can guarantee you that will be a lot less.

Another wonderful milestone in divorcing ourselves from the hotel operation here is that we have our wonderful maid, Manuela, back with us. A couple years ago, the macho management fired her mainly because she wouldn't take their shit. I'll leave out the details but it was ugly and it was one of the main reasons I started wanting out of this whole group. I didn't ask her to come back right away because I was not willing to subject her to their BS but things have been calm and they did agree not to talk to her or bother her in any way.

So, last Monday was the return of Manuela and Mimi and I are in heaven. Our place has not looked this good since she left. There are areas that I think I just trained myself not to look at because they were always dusty and yucky, now everything sparkles. I can see out of all of my windows and I didn't have to say one word. In the past, I would have to hound the maids to clean the windows.

Our last maid was so good at ignoring stuff that she could ignore dirty dishes and pots and pans that were sitting on the stove in the kitchen! You could safely leave your empty coffee cup on the coffee table for a week and it would not be disturbed. She even got to the point that she could ignore dirty dishes that were on the other side of the drainboard, not the side closest to the sink. That's talent. If I didn't follow her around pointing things out, they were ignored.

She also refused to learn how to make a bed. I showed her many times how I would prefer to sleep on the right side of the sheets and that she didn't need to turn the sheet back and tuck it in like a marine before putting the blanket on and doing the same with it. Trying to break into the bed after she made it was not easy. She made great towel animals though and that was the main thing she wanted to do while here. I ruined all her fun by telling her I really preferred the towels hanging in the bathroom and not made into swans on my bed.

I know, this all sounds rather petty but if you knew what I have been paying for this shoddy service then you'd understand my frustration. It finally got to be too much hassle and we just stopped letting them come in to clean more than once a week. Even then, they didn't do much. But still, I paid for daily maid service that was supplied to renters, for all that towel animal building time, for 3 guys who were supposed to do things like clean the screens but never did unless you called the office every day for weeks, it goes on but... back to the good!

Our condo is a joy to walk into now. I am noticing things I just never looked at, my artisania doesn't have a layer of salt grime and dust on it and wow! I'm in love with it all over again. Mimi started doing a happy dance after Manuela's first day because her coffee pot was clean! In 4 years, not one of the maids has taken the old coffee filter out and cleaned the pot unless one of us stood over her and didn't leave until it was done. I think we've both gone up and spontaneously kissed her in the last week just because it was such a pleasure to be here now and to have her here. What I can't figure out is why I let this all go for so long. I should have nutted up on these people a long time ago. If I had, I might not be so angry about it all now. I have to get over that, it was my fault as well for putting up with it.

Cute kitty! I'm really glad to hear that he's healthy, good job! If you want any more kitties...well, you know.

It's also good to hear about the continued benefits of condo-association-liberation! I'm sure the neighbors will start getting jealous soon and will start to follow your lead.

Jonna, remember the bumper sticker, remember the bumper sticker, remember the.....
It's just easier to fall into the ni modo way. Someone was complaining about her maid to me, I said "so let her go" they looked at me like I was crazy.
I congratulate you on having the gumption to get out of a bad situation! You guys deserve Manuela and I bet she is happy as can be to once again work for such great people.
regards,
Theresa

Dirty dishes? Unmade beds? Hell, Jonna! I could've worked for you! :^)

Tito looks so cute and I'm glad he's getting better. John took one look at Tito's photo and said, "Yeah, right, they're gonna give him away. Suuuuure."

Hope to get to see you two (or all six of you) when you head to Gillette.

I forgot to mention that the ball Tito is playing with is not tennis ball size, it's ping pong ball size! He's still a tiny fellow.

River Girl, those kittehs at your vet are so cute I could drive right over there but no, no, no. I still don't know how this will all work when we need to go back to Merida in the RV - with 3 dogs and a tiny kitteh?

The dogs are very interested, too interested in my opinion. I worry about this as I've had some bad stuff happen in the past with dogs and cats. We are going to take this very, very slowly.

I also think that there could be changes in how other owners see this whole thing but I hope that doesn't cause me more problems.

Theresa, you are right. The ni modo attitude is what let me slide on like this so long. That and fear that it could get worse.

John's right Ilene, Tito is staying. There is a Canadian woman here who said she wanted to take him north with her. Its too late to even consider that.

I always hesitate about writing about some things like having a maid. It is different than in the north, but it's not an easy difference to get across. I'll say this, if you can afford it and if hiring a maid means someone who really wants and needs the work, has work... it's a win-win.

The gray areas are in how you treat them, whether you pay the required taxes and medical insurance, what kind of 'perks' are required (this can and does include things required by male managers or male family members that I'd rather not go into), whether they are honest or stealing, whether they only show up occasionally or regularly, whether you can fire them without being sued, the list is long.

So, yes, it is a different world. In a lot of ways. I had hot oatmeal with fresh mango in it this morning, that would never have been in my reality in the north.

You know Rachel that the welcome mat is out whenever you guys want to come down and experience life in the tropics.

thank you jonna... and we are looking forward to that happening.... i am quite sure that it IS different there... and i cant wait to find out about it......

i've never really had to look at the 'maid' issue. my experience is nil...of course i would probably clean my house thoroughly before ever having someone else come in and do it.... i can see where there could be many issues surrounding the whole idea of it...

It took 4 tries with horrible experiences but our current cleaning lady has been with us for 2.5 years. I trust her completely and she does a good job. Except that every week she breaks something. Usually the handles on the brooms or mops. She is a vicious cleaner! (did I say how much we adore her?)

I get embarrassed talking about our maid, too. We can only afford to have her come 1X per week, but we have given her this steady gig for almost 4 years, and now she cleans our office once a week, too. She is definitely the world's worst maid, she basically moves stuff around and wipes things and that's about it, but she has job security. Our dogs love her (they hate everyone!), she is dependable and trustworthy, and once a week I get to come home to a relatively clean house.

I know, I helped Manuela get another job after they fired her here and when I was over there I was always jealous of how good their place looked. Plus, when you were writing about your maid problems I could really identify. I didn't say anything because my problems weren't as bad since we didn't live here all the time. I'm still thrilled Manuela is back. Today she oiled all the wood doors and closets - they gleam! It's just awesome to be here now. Sorry, I shouldn't rub it in. Heh!

YeaH, yeah, yeah...I know how sorry you are. ;-)

Just a tip on that oil: Be careful! There is a "red oil" here in Honduras that is very popular. It may be good for some finishes, but for others, it completely ruined the finish on some of my furniture. It softened the finish which gradually just wore away to bare wood. I wish I knew which type of finish it can't be used on but I don't, so I don't use it at all anymore.

PS: You don't have to respond. ;-D

Just thought I would mention that.

I never mind responding when I have a bit of time and I'm interested in the subject, it's when I'm over the hill with stuff to do and then I forget.

Anyway, it kind of feels like we are over here in a corner of the blogosphere having a conversation and no one is paying attention. Who knows if that's true, and I don't really care if they are, but I love the feeling of it.

So, the Red Oil is something she can't live without and that is what she used on all the doors and cabinets. I don't have any furniture here that isn't from here though, and most of it is hardwood with some kind of local varnish on it.

I don't like that overly varnished, shiny look that is popular here so I am always saying, natural por favor. Right now this guy is sanding down our front door and I've had to repeat over and over that I want the stain to be natural and not glossy. We'll see.

Agree 100%!!!

Here in Honduras, everyone wants to use stain that is more like brown paint and completely covers the wood grain. Wood is beautiful, why not show it.

An additional problem is that that both stain and the final finish are watered down so much that they barely last a year. I've seen people who pay $1,000 or more for a fancy front door and the finish is ruined in no time. It's just plain crazy.

In our case we bought all the materials and gave them instructions not to dilute AT ALL. They still did it, even though it wasn't money coming out of their pockets. it's hard to understand the thinking.

Sorry for the long conversation. Sometimes I think I should just write an article, but I wanted to pass on that info so you can keep an eye on your workers.

That's it from me. I promise.
