So, guess what happened today while I was happily contemplating not having to go out until after all the Easter crowds were gone?

Mimi fell while doing some work downstairs at the RV, she badly sprained her ankle and badly bruised the tendons on her right arm.

In fact, we both thought the arm was broken. I have my ancient 1st responder training and on seeing the swelling in the middle of her forearm and seeing her almost screaming with pain, I figured it was broken. I was just glad it hadn't broken the skin and hoping that she wouldn't need surgery.

I got her into the truck and off we went through the crowds to the hospital in Playa. They gave her a 'happy shot' right away - all of these pictures were taken AFTER the happy shot, she was not in the mood before it.

They took 6 xrays, and the great news was that no bones are broken. She's in a lot of pain though and not very happy, in spite of the shot and the happy pills. It is her right arm (and she is right handed) and her left ankle. I have no idea how she managed that one. They put a temp cast on her arm to immobilize her hand, wrist and arm. They wrapped her ankle and told her not to put any weight on it for at least 3 days.

With the help of our friend Rodrigo, she got up the stairs and onto the couch. Another friend loaned her one crutch so she can get to the bathroom. She can't use 2 crutches because of her arm.

Did I mention that she's not very happy?

I couldn't believe the crowds down in the main part of Akumal. Those of you who know it, the huge parking lot outside the arches was full and there were cars parked all up and down the road. Hordes of people walking in the road. This was at about 1pm so we were lucky that we didn't have so much traffic on the highway going to the hospital. Coming back though, it was starting to get crowded on the road as everyone left the beach.

At times like this I really love our little corner of the bay. This is a picture I took from our deck about a half hour before Mimi fell. I was gloating a bit, yes the karma gods no doubt immediately arranged for me to go and join the crowds. It's not a bad spot to hole up and get better, Mimi has TV and internet and friends coming by to see her. She'll be fine... me, on the other hand, I get to be the bad cop and keep telling her to stay off her foot, put the ice back on your arm, keep the foot elevated....

Jonna...
John, as my caregiver, has some advice for you as Mimi's caregiver; "Let her have more 'happy pills' and just stay out of her way." Sounds like a plan to me. Mimi, sweetie, just relax, be in the moment, and enjoy watching Jonna wait on you. You just might get used to it. ;^)
As for the pain, try not to let it piss you off. It only makes the pain worse. Don't know why it works that way but it does. Play with the dogs and read good books. And take care of yourself. We're both sending healing thoughts your way.

That sucks. But I guess if I want to play Polyanna I guess I can say to be happy it isn't the heat of summer and be glad you're not on the road in a remote place. Puts it in perspective....

So, enjoy getting waited on, Mimi, maybe she'll make you one of those killer drinks!

We've been having our own challenges with the kharma gods but you must have pissed them off so much they missed Akumal by a number of kilometers and hit PaaMul.

Poor poor mimi. I'm so sorry and while I LOVE Mexican health care they are very skimpy on pain relief. I'll see if Jamie has any super motrin or something.

We're heading down to YalKu tomorrow and we'll wave as we pass. Maybe we should have my paramedic BIL set Mimi up with a catheter (ducks Mimi's thrown coconut)?

The crowds have been insane this Semana Santa but it could just be because we have guests and are going out instead of staying home (like we usually do and miss all the crowds).

Oh no! Boy do I understand the frustration. I'm glad it isn't broken. I'm sitting here trying to imagine how I would have gotten around if an arm had been involved too.

If you have happy pills.....TAKE THEM.

WOW! I'm so sorry to hear this!

Mimi, take care, I know being down is not your normal state but try to make the best of it. Maybe one or two Tropical Hoo Has will help?

Jonna, try to enjoy playing Nurse, and maybe you should have a couple of extra Hoo Has also!

Hugs to you both, we miss you.

Kate

Pobrecita! Ay, que malo suerte. I think more happy pills combined with some tropical hoo has will do the trick. ;-)

Please send my healing energy to Miss Mimi and a hug to her nurse Jonna for being such a good caregiver.

So did she have that middle finger splinted up? No?that was just special for you?I agree with Mimi, it sucks to be immobile, especially if you are an active person.
You might try Tramadol (tramacet?)for pain, it's pretty good stuff and available here without a script. It's paracetamol (Tylenol) plus a mild opiate. Of course ask your doctor first.
regards,
Theresa

Thanks all. Yes to the Tramadol, that is some good stuff! Also Dolac, which is the same happy drug I think but without the paracetamol, the Dr said it was called Tordol in the US. She's taking an anti-inflammatory that the Dr requested and Tramadol or Dolac as well. No Hoo Ha's though as I don't want her passing out. I, however, have had a few!

She's got a lot of movies that friends have brought her, books and she's just bored and irritated with herself.

She was tying a rope up on a palm tree to air out the dog beds, standing on the side of an SUV parked there, her foot slipped when she stepped off the running board and down she went. She almost blacked out, got herself into a sitting position and then thought she was going to pass out but shouldn't be in the sun. So, she managed to get into the RV and was trying to wiggle and bounce enough to get the phone out of her right hand shorts pocket when I called her for something. The phone fell out and she was able to answer it. I wish I had a picture of the wiggle and shake to get the phone :)

Oh, and yes that middle finger sticking up in the wheelchair picture is on her good hand, it was a comment on me taking her picture. Heh!

Ah, poor Mimi! I've been in a hard cast for the last three weeks and I totally FEEL for her in this wretched heat. May she heal quickly.
