Quarentita (little #40)

One of the dogs brought in by the Marines in Xcalak really caught our eye. She was gorgeous, she was healthier than her siblings, about 4 months old and she had the cutest face... So, we took her home instead of sending her back to the Marine base.

We had some friends who were thinking of getting a dog and we were going to take her to them.

She had been #40 at the clinic so we started calling her Quarentita. She stole our hearts as fast as she stole Cuba's stuffed bunny.

She only spent 4 days with us but she changed so much in that time. At first she was afraid of people and didn't like being touched. Within a day, she was meeting me at the door wagging her tail along with the rest of our pack. She got braver and showed more personality every day.

When we found out that our friends wouldn't be able to take her after all, both Mimi and I wanted so much to keep her. We knew it was not the best plan though, we were really getting crowded in our RV with 4 dogs.

So, when one of the volunteers at the Mahahual clinic said she wanted to take her, we reluctantly agreed.

I gathered up her toy shark and her bowl and her medicine and took her down to the clinic. It broke my heart.

Sarah is a wonderful person though and she loves her. She has an Australian shepard so Quarentita won't be alone. I know she is going to be loved and have a better life in Mahahual and I feel good about that.

I really miss her though.

Damn! I was getting ready to email you and tell you that we want her. I just fell in love with that sweet face and that polka-dot tummy! You guys are doing such great work. Wish we could be there to help.

Oh Ilene, I know! I fell in love with her too. That face! She was really funny when she started getting braver. She spotted herself in the mirror one day and started barking. She kept looking at the other dogs like "hey, intruder! why aren't you barking?" I'd calm her down and then a little later she'd turn around, see herself again in the mirror and jump back and bark. I was laughing so hard my side hurt.

We adopted a stray puppy (she was about 6 mths. old) many years ago that obviously had never been inside a home. The first time we turned on the TV she went nuts. There was an "intruder" in that box! She could hear his voice! We laughed and then petted her. After a while I think she kept barking because she knew she'd get our attention.

(sigh) The right dog for us is out there somewhere. Now to talk John into that. ;^)

What a great story. Last night while I was walking Professor Jiggs (my golden retriever), I started thinking about my eventual move to Mexico, whether Jiggs will still be with me when I make the trip, and whether I want to have another dog after Jiggs is gone. Your pictures provided the answer: yes! Thank you for making my day.

How about a cute little reddish dog in Calderitas that Mimi and Jonna helped to rescue and now needs a good home? Any takers? Jonna and Mimi can tell you more about him...

She has the same "only a dalmatian on her belly" syndrome as one of our dogs! And here I thought she was unique!
