Cuba is back home! She spent almost another week at the vet, 10 days total, had a lot of antibiotics and some kind of stomach medicine. She's eating and seems to feel good. We took the dogs down to the beach at Progreso yesterday to run. It's the closest beach to Merida, about 20 miles, and is on the Gulf coast. I forgot the camera but got this picture with my cell phone. It was chilly and grey - chilly for us means it was in the 60's F, and we stopped at a restaurant on the beach, Flamingos. I had Sopa de Lima, hot chicken soup with lime, and queso fundido, melted cheese with chile strips. Hot food on a cold day at the beach!
On the way home, we drove down the coast a little, there is a long lagoon that runs parallel to the coast along there and we had heard there were flamingos. We saw them! Usually the flamingos are found in huge numbers at lagoons a couple hours in 2 directions from Merida. I guess these had stopped off on the way to the big gathering. The phone camera doesn't do so well at a distance, still, those pink blogs are flamingos. Today was beautiful, sunny and warm. We had our appointment at the immigration office. Got our fingerprints taken, answered some questions, signed the documents. We should pick up our new visas next Thursday.
Mimi wanted to fly to Puerto Vallarta in Nov. to see her friend Shann, who is performing at a resort there. We looked at flights online, there are several good low cost national airlines and we were hoping for a good price. Not so good really, probably because it is one resort area to another or because there isn't a non stop flight so she has to change planes in Mexico City. We decided to go over to the mall near here and see if we could find a better deal. It's a great mall, Plaza Grande, with all the usual stores, multiple levels and branches. We wandered around, found one travel agency that was closed, and then found a branch office of the airline we were looking at, Aviansca. They had a special that saved about $80US so she got the tickets. She'll be gone from the 3rd to the 7th of Nov and I'll get to manage 3 dogs and try and stay out of trouble by myself ;) On the other hand, she gets to navigate the airport in Mexico City by herself, which is making her a little tense.
Plus, we had the perfect excuse to eat mall food. Actually, the chinese in the food court was pretty good. The one difference between mall food here and mall food in the US is that as you walk around looking at all the different foods, they offer you tastes on toothpicks at all the stalls. You could almost just graze your way to full.

Glad to read Cuba is doing okay. I was beginning to worry because you had not posted since she got sick. Does the Vet know what was wrong?
I'm glad all is well with Cuba. I'm curious too about what was wrong with her.
The paper here today had pictures of high winds at the beach in Progresso...was that while you were there?
We've been checking daily... glad to hear Cuba is OK. Looking forward to meeting her...see you all soon.

I still don't have a clear idea myself what was happening with Cuba. We're taking her back on Sat for her shots and I will ask some more.
My thought is that it is very difficult to do this surgery on a dog that is in full heat and perhaps she had a nick or she got an infection from that. Or, it was just a stomach inflammation from the oral antibiotics. Or, she has some kind of parasite that they did not see in the first test. The stomach inflammation is a good possibility because she was not in very good shape, had been eating scraps and garbage and they had her on strong antibiotics.
We will take her to Paco when we get back to the coast and get a full workup on her, just to relieve our minds.
David, I think you are Chica's last hope. Somewhere in the back of her mind I'll bet she is hoping that Cuba will go live downstairs like Maya did. Heh! We are always making jokes and pretending we are talking for the dogs. Our latest has Chica looking out the window and saying "Where are the Canadians?"
Nancy, I think the high winds were the day before we were in Progreso. They weren't bad when we were there but there was a huge amount of seaweed and other detrius blown up on the beach. A norte had blown in which caused the chilly weather and they usually come in on strong winds.
Joanna a few months back I stumbled upon your blog. You may remember that I emailed you, curiuos about purchasing property in Mexico. You so kindly answered me back. Thank you. I have kept up with your travels. And so glad that your new pup is feeling better.
Do you know much about Chelem? I've been in contact with a Realtor in Merida (Jim Mann). Hope to check it out soon. My partner and I are from Colorado.
Thanks Sherry
and hope to hear from you again.
Joanna,
We also live in Merida and are real dog people...have 4...we've tried several different vets in town, but have finally found two who we really feel good about. There names are Nelson and Antonio and their clinic is called Planned Pethood. They both speak great English, but, more importantly, they are really up to date with their medical techniques, and they are wonderful with their patients. Their clinic is also by far the cleanest we have run across in almost 7 years in Mexico. Their # is 944-2310. They are on Calle 60 a few blocks north of Costco.
Good luck with Cuba.
LeAnn
Leann, thank you so much for that recommendation. We do need a vet we feel good about here in Merida, we can't be running for the coast whenever the dogs get sick. I can't really say this vet did anything wrong but I wonder, and I'm not really confident. I will call Planned Pethood and go there the next time.
